The “AI Race Referee Project” changed competitive swimming by employing AI to provide race analysis in real-time with the highest levels of accuracy. Having an automated system, the swimmer tracking, finish time, and determination of the winner no longer have issues with people being wrong or distracted. Such an innovative solution helps improve the overall performance, increase the efficiency of work, and establish a new level of race timing in the sports industry.

Timing as well as precision are very important aspects here in competitive swimming. Another objective difficulty is to accurately track multiple swimmers in the race and to identify them and their performance without fail at human discretion. Conventional approaches are slow and inaccurate, particularly if several swimmers are compared at the same time. Specifically, the presented scenario implies the need for an advanced computer vision system that enables the tracking of swimmers in real-time, identification of a winner, and a swimmer’s time without being affected by interference such as a person standing or sitting next to the water. This criterion was important because the system has to provide accurate and timely decision-supporting information for performance assessment.

To solve this, we created a complex race timing system from computer vision and artificial intelligence. The chief idea of the project, which was completed in two stages, was to introduce automation and accuracy to the analysis of competitive swimming.
